It could have been me
by Natalie Kiser
It could have been me
Flourishing with life
But I let you
I gave my life to you, all for you
Because love shows no bounds
I will support you even in death
So that you may bloom with life
Do not despair
Know that death does no mean the end
Know that I am right here with you
Always and forever
So live on
Carry with you my hopes and dreams
Fill your life with brightness and beauty
Cherish the good and the bad
And if you ever feel lonely
Know that I am not gone
I will be in your heart
Every step of the way
It could have been me
But I am happy it was you
An ekphrastic poem inspired by Rachel Ruysch’s “Floral Still Life,” 1686.
Cherish the good and the bad
And if you ever feel lonely
Know that I am not gone
I will be in your heart
Every step of the way
It could have been me
But I am happy it was you
