One Fujin
by Nilmani Rivera
An ekphrastic poem inspired by “Three Fujins”, a painting by Hung Liu, 1995.
I sit here and look pretty
But the tears still run
My tears are heavy with my burden.
My tears become my new comfort.
My tears aren’t even mine
My tears are beautiful
I’ll start to drown in this fabric.
This beautiful, soft fabric
That’s slowly suffocating me.
The scarf around my neck starts to feel like noose
A noose that tightens at every little moment.
A noose that others dream of even when a noose still is a noose.
My beautiful noose
So I sit here as one lonely fujin.
